Croatian Voice and Song | an embodied archive

Beyond the constructs of operatic training, the natural voice emerges an archive of cultural transmission where primal memory, songs, and stories awaken, becoming a catalyst for creative exploration through composition, poetry, and song.

This collection of experimental sonic works explores Croatian heritage through natural voice, electronic sound, and intergenerational vocal memory. Inspired by songs, stories, and the soundscape of the Dalmatian coast, the works form part of an ongoing creative investigation within my practice-based research.

Intergenerational transmission through song

Mother waits for her daughter

Smiljana

A poem born from intergenerational collaboration and transmission of the tragic story of Smiljana. From the poem came a soundscape which represents the night she never came home.

Limpid sea water so clear you can see the rocks underneath the surface

Marama Crnu

A short story inspired by a a black ribbon, the Croatian sea and the infinite poetic reflections on love found and love lost.

One Summer

A poetic tribute to my feminine familial ties remember a summer spent as a child, bonding with my mother’s land, language and culture.

Jasam bila Malo Dite

I was a little girl, clean and pure of heart, an embodied klapa inspired exploration of natural voice, language and intergenerational cultural transmission.

Mila Moja

A song inspired by familial culture, language and sonic exploration of vocal timbre and tone.

O More more! (Oh Sea, sea!)

This work emerged from a poem shared with me by my grandmother, which initiated my first sonic exploration of the natural voice. The piece combines vocal experimentation with electronic elements, including the sound of the sea, evoking Dalmatian cultural memory and reflecting intergenerational vocal transmission.
